Why Is Latin America So Poor, Growing So Slowly, And Persistent?

Q. Latin America differs greatly from north america. Its was colonized exlusively by spain except for brazil which was portugal. For some reason, the colonial powers left them nothing to grow and flourish. They region have severe levels of poverty, inequality, lack of development in all areas, and very corrupt governments.

However, there is strong consenses they are not in state of africa, middle east, or poor asian nations and there is a strong chance they can grow. In fact, many are middle income with per capita inciome near 10,000 US Dollars.

In any event, why is latin american failing to achieve the economic growth neccessary to become developed.

Answer
I don't know what you mean by "so poor" but I'm sure Brazil is not, any way.

Brazil's GDP is 2 trillion Dollars (2009), World 8#, and will surpass UK and France as fast as possible. I'm sure a nation among the 7 richest economies can't be considered a "so poor" nation.

More than 300 trade shows take place in Brazil every year and trade shows for everything you can imagine: from oil and gas to aircraft. Wedding, real state, , tourism, jewllery and luxury products. Every big city in Brazil have, at least, 10 Shopping Centers. Brazilians are very, very good costumers/consumers. We have hundred thousand stores and a lot of home shopping channel that sell home appliances, wear, electronics and other stuffs like persian carpet, horses and cattle for farmers.

Middle class + upper class are 61% and rich are 5%. The population of millionaires is more than 1 million and this number is growing (164 new milionaires/day). We have a lot of stores of luxury brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Tyfanny, Ferrari, Rols-Royce (note that a cheap Ferrari or RR costs 1 milion Dollars in Brazil due to import taxes) and midle class have the same standar of life that middle class in United States.

So, I don't think this is a standard of poor nation, man.

Upon colonization, Yes, Brazil was settled by portuguese and Northern European nations. Brazil is nation of immigrants and descendants exactly like United States. The difference was the nation that discovered each one.

Answer
husband was a colonal in the army
lived on a farm
put a glass of milk out at night
got a gardening job to support the army
two stations (trains) she was told which to go on, she arrived at the wrong station, her coachman was at the other station. A man got her a cab to take her to the other station.
She will always remember the beautiful gates to get into the garden. It was like the garden of eden.
some of the things she grew: tomatoes and grapes in that garden
she worked there 3 1/2 years
End of the war: drizzly morning. there were 3 or 4 men in the garden usually. The head gardener was???
There was a celebration
She had a pass to leave
During the war, the women went on a procession in Lesturn? to recruit women.
The army allowed women to do jobs that they were ordinarily not allowed to do.
Uniform: breeches (pants) boots that buckled down the side. Smock (shirt) cardigan for cold, scout hat.

Be at work at 7
milk 30 cows.
men in fields in afternoon, so only 2 women were there for that time
Dairy work
they soon got milking machines
no butter
milk was in jugs
what didn't sell, was put in churns
on cold winter days, the hardest part was getting buckets and buckets of water for the cows (or they won't have milk the next day)
2 lbs 15 a week (she had to pay her keep out of it)
jobs there at the farm: hay, harvesting, clean sheds, feed cows,
not much extra just because she was on the farm...sometimes an extra drop of milk, or bit of cheese
when a cow was about to have a calf, they had to watch it. sometimse she took a calf home in a wheelbarrow
A cave? is when a cow died, so a calf had no mother. she would raise it with a bottle.
overalls, smocks, breeches, hat with brim
11 at night to go home on bicycle, supper, wash
she was the only land girl on that farm
sometimes it was very muddy and they would be stuck. it was also dark, so they carried a stcik
her sister was in ammunitions, and they wanted her to be in it with her, but she really liked being in the land army at the farm

answered an ad in the paper to sign up for the land army. (wrote in) they prepared early for the war, so they had applications in early, then got them together when the war started
she was in printing, which was still required, so she stayed with that, eventually printing was declared a luxury trade, so she was asked to join the land army
tried engineering (heard there was money) didn't like the noise, dirt, drove her crazy
went to airplanes (to make parts) finished the week there
did driving lessons, so she wanted to teach driving at ATS, they werent accepting women
june 1940 joined land army
had to be physically fit, had a month training
learn to hand milk, hay making, corn gathering
mr and mrs walker were the farmers
one other girl and herself
she hand milked the cows...went through strainer, but in churn.
no sheep
pigs, horses, cows...looked after the animals
too light to go to bed, so she looked after a cow who was about to have a calf. the cow was in a field far off, she talked to the cow, it shook its head for her to back off.
it was easy enough to get out, some came and went, but of course the army
other jobs (she did not do) chop down trees, sawmill,, also market jobs
once 4 girls tried to manage the cows, while the boys took the sheep, one escaped
the milk was sent off to the milk market

after milking, cows to clean, prepare food for animals, collect eggs, get water for animals, clean twice a day, pig had 13 piglets, which got lost in the corn, imitate the sound to get them out
picked one up once...squealing so loudly
6 oclock work was finished, unless it was summer, had to gather all hay off ground to make sure the rain didn't seep in
wellingtons all the time upset her feet
got off that private farm
looked after 62 girls at a hostel as forewoman
responsible for work schedules responsible to land army and also agriculture commitee
laurie arived at 6 am to take girls to the work sites for the day, then came back to pick them up in the afternoon.
office open 9-5, girls didn't get back until affter 6
Lebanon hostel was specifically built for the hostel, common room for mels and drinks,
one girl caught a
dungarees, miking smock, short sleeve cotton shirt, green pullover, cordoroy breech, shoes, socks, (too strong leather of shoes for her feet)
worked for 3 years
16 shillings week to pay for lodging, got just payed a little over that
earned 3lb a week as forewoman
could sometimes go in to the movie (pictures) the land girls, and army boys would visit there then meet back at the hostel, some would entertain everyone
west end of dormitory were more sheltered and refined. east end of dormitory were tougher
saturday mornings time sheets were supposed to be done, but sometimes the girls would go home on friday and didn't fill them out, so it was a pain for her on saturday mornings
once she altered the time sheet because the girls didn't have the right times, but that was actually illegal, so she didn't do that
the girls weren't married, but they were allowed to be
each local place had its own local office she was in contact once whith the main office, she had helped build a combine harvester. she went to the field to use is (only on occassions like that did she go into Lester) took cycle on train and cycled after the train ride
only when changing jobs did she have contact with main office.
prisoners worked...spades, forks, LWAC (lester war acres committee) was stamped on each of the tools. on the machinery, they had to have a small disk on the it with LWAC
some times, tools were lost, and some people had to go round them all up.
at the end of the war, the Italian prisoners were returned to Italy. they were lively, ready to laugh, cheerful. came to garden depot. cooked a mixture of horsemeat. had a fire arranged to have a "party"
german prosoners returned to their homes
in the center of the garden depot, was the machinery drawn up and parked, combines, rowers, etc,
someone asked her to help him...crates were coming from the station, and she was asked to build a combine... they had to move the machines.
the crates came..."OLIVER" was one of the name brands. had to look for instructions. came from canada and USA.
hedges had to be taken away so that the combines could have a smoother go
last one they built had an engine, hedge platform. could go at 5 mph, and they needed to tranport it 17 miles away. it was gray an cold and windy day. keep off the main highways, kept on country lanes.
called to office, helped build them, so now she should work one.
the tractor was not wheels, it had base like a tank.
had a lever to lower the "cutting knife" "we're only here because no one else would tackle it" the corn, barley whatever it was, was flat. one part of the field dropped into a ditch, they managed to avoid it, 8:30...they stopped. she had to keep the lever all the way down to get that flat stuff, so on her knees all day. the tractor driver would jerk the machine sometimes to free the cutters of too much hay, one of the jerks, she fell out of the seat and landed in front of the cutters, twisted a ligament in her elbow...went to the dr, couldn't work for a couple weeks, ended up back a great burden to do supervision.
land army didn't end in 1946 wehn the war ended. some of the girls stayed on until they retired.
civilian life was very tame compared to the unexpected challenges of every day in the land army.
