A watch repairman I know well said Rolex movements are Rube oldberg and vastly overpriced. He said TAG Heuer uses ever cheaper movements and charges ever higher prices for them. Omega is a great buy according to several repairmen. I am discussing bottom line luxury brands now. The beasast watch brands can be expected to be the costliest. I have written three editions of "THE COSTLIEST WATCH BRANDS" and am working on the fourth edition. Breguet has a strong lead in all editions as the costliest brand. My repairmen speak in awe of Breguet movements, for they are works of art. Close for second and third costliest are Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, 4th is A. Lange $ Sohne of Germany. Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget and Audemars Piguet are also in the top level. Here are prices of some of my own basic gold mechanical dress watches with leather straps.
$13,850 Patek Philippe "Calatrava 3529D"
$12,100 Cartier "Tank Louis Cartier"
$10,700 Cartier "Santos Dumont"
$11,500 Vacheron Constantibn "Patrimony XL"
$9300 Piaget "Altiplano"
$9150 Jaeger-Lecoultre "Master Ultra-Thin"
For comparison, a Rolex "Cellini Classic" cost $3560 recently. I do not see how anyone can argue coherently that cheap watches are as good as costly ones. Youu did ask for the best brand, and watch repairman I know say Breguet is. it is also costliest as one might expect. Of the cheaaper brands you mention, Omega is the repairmen's choice. Indeed, I have both dress and sports models by Omega, so I like this brand.

Why are Americans so spoiled?
Kevin
I was watching Oprah the other day and it was about how much Americans over spend on unnecessary items. I was appalled. One girl has boxes of shoes, a 7 bedroom house, three cars (one driver) and spends $300 a week on FOOD!
Now, I know everyone doesn't live like this but when I was in America last year, I have to say, I felt like a poor person in comparison to my cousins friends. He invited me to the 'Mall' with his friends and I only brought $25 (which I thought was enough) and they all had $50 - $100. All of them... I was shocked. When we went to his friends house after, the house was massive, the children has laptops, a huge plasma TV, thousands of toys, luxurious amounts of food etc.
I'm not branding all Americans as the same, but, the American life-style seems very superficial to me. I think many live the "American Dream" need to wake up...
"Because we can afford it"
Hmmm . . . And thats why their is a recession ?
"We earn it"
Yeah, by taking all of the well-paid jobs and University places and giving the shit, low paid jobs for migrant Mexican workers etc.
I care because it sickens me to see a 16 year old spend $100 on clothes she probably wont wear and then see a family that have been made homeless... Sorry, I guess I have morals.

I'm terribly sorry, but not all Americans are this way. It is true, there are some, but overall, not many live this way.
I worked hard. Need an example?
Just for the opportunity to go to college (which my parents could not afford), I had to work two full time jobs, living IN A CAMPER IN A FRIEND'S DRIVEWAY for the first two years because I couldn't afford to live on campus! Then afterward, I lived on campus, worked for the college doing crappy jobs full time, and keeping one of my two off-campus full time jobs while going to school full time. Sounds impossible, doesn't it. I didn't sleep but 3 hours at a time, sometimes four...and yet, I passed my classes with flying colors, made enough money to pay for my own wedding.
I paid $50 a month for the first two years for rent.
I paid $30 a month for food, mostly ramen noodles and tea all six years.
I got clothes from Goodwill if I needed them for around $25 a year (jeans, t-shirts, work scrubs, etc). I was elated to get socks and underwear for Christmas.
I still hold those values. My kid's college funds are already set, they each have enough life insurance to last them their entire lives. If they want a car, they will have to get it the same way I did - get a job. If they want any luxuries they will have to get them the same way I did - get a job. My parents taught me well. I know what it is to be poor. I know what it is to go hungry. I know what it is to not have a dry roof over my head. I know how to save. I always have a back up plan. I guess some Americans are not teaching their children the values they were taught when they were younger, or maybe they were never taught those values themselves.
It's sad, really.
