What was life like for a mom in the late 1800's? Say she lived in a tenement house with children. And what are the problems associated with urban growth in the era?

Tenemnt living was worse than we can imagine. No running water, means no plumbing. Cooking was done on wood or coal stoves. "think of the heat in summer." In winter many times people couldn't afford coal or wood so the only time they were warm was when meals were cooking until the stoves went out. Most people sold old rags to a rag man that came around 1 or 2 times wk.ly. There were also milkmen who delivered milk by horse & cart, that's where alot of the rag money went. Poor mothers that lived near waterways had to watch their children; children were stolen for slaves, they were trained as thieves, they were also sold to rich people that couldn't have children. (some things haven't changed much) There was no aid for mothers at all, if the father was injured at work etc. there was nothing. Some women scrubed floors, carried water & washed clothes, ironed clothes, & if some were talented enough they would make dresses, shirts, childrens cloths, etc. for wealthier people who could afford it. Children were sick alot, very few people in tenements raised all their children to adulthood. To be clean & fed was an accomplishment because you had to make your own soap in a wash tub on the woodstove in the kitchen & with that soap you washed everything from the kids to the floors. There were no sanitary supplies at that time for women. Water was used & reused before dicarded. People went to bed early to save candle wax, many fires were started by candles in a room with a small child or by along skirt brushing to close to the flame. Women used to take turns on 1 day of each wk., they would have some of the neighbor ladies over for a cup of weak tea. A little girl that was offered a cup felt very special & pampered. During Christmas holiday it was rare that a family had a tree. Sometimes several families would give a few pennies & put a tree in an older ladies room & on Christmas Day would bring what they could in the way of food. They celebrated Christmas by being there for each other & sharing what tiny bit they had. There were gifts for children if parents could get a little money, but gifts were rare indeed. An orange & a penny in a stocking was considered wealth by a child. Other gifts were sock dolls, marbles(4 for 1cent), handmade socks & mittens or scarf. What would our children think of that? It was an endless list of misery that was a womens way of life. The men had it a little better, if it was to just walk to work & get out of the rank smelling homes. In that day the tenement dweller lived a hard filthy life with little or no luxury & alot of work until taken in death. The tenements of today would be an extreme luxury indeed to a mother of the early 1800 hundreds.
